City Living at the 2017 RHS Chelsea Flower Show

Designer Kate Gould makes a welcome return to the 2017 RHS Chelsea Flower Show with a garden in the Fresh Category – ‘City Living’.

A contemporary garden, City Living demonstrates how a typical urban apartment block can be transformed with the addition of attractive green outdoor spaces for residents. The space will feature comfortable and sheltered seating areas surrounded by appealing planting and tranquil water features.

It is a garden easily adapted to be added to existing buildings or inserted into new builds to effectively ‘green up’ city spaces and provide valuable habitat for wildlife and birds.

Set on three levels with a mezzanine floor, the garden is positioned directly adjacent to the dwellings making use of the space beneath and alongside the building while at the same time provides an interesting ‘green’ route to residents homes.

The hard landscaping will include sustainably sourced hard wood decking, decorative tiles and a specialist light transmitting concrete which will be particularly eye catching when the garden is lit in the evenings.

The idea of greening up city spaces is one that is close to Kate’s heart – she has explored this theme twice before at RHS Chelsea in 2009 and 2013, receiving a Gold medal on both occasions as well as Best in Category for her 2009 ECO Chic Garden.
