New Garden Design Diploma Course in Cheshire

Pip Probert, in-house garden designer at Outer Spaces, will be bringing her expertise to Cheshire this year with a new series of courses based at Arley Hall and Gardens.

After seven years teaching various short courses in Garden and Floral Design along with a Diploma in Garden Design at various locations, including Ness Botanic Gardens, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and Fieldcrest Gardening School, Pip has now branched out and developed this new series of courses. The courses will be taught by Pip with other members of the Outer Spaces team assisting in their individual skills.

The main course will be the Garden Design Diploma, a two-year programme aimed at people looking to change career or even just start a business in the profession: “As a student you don’t need to have any previous garden design experience but a keen interest in the subject and horticulture in general would help you as you take on this new venture,” explains Pip.

The course covers a wide range of topics within the subject, allowing students to learn everything needed to complete a design project. Students will cover garden design alongside construction, health and safety, business set up and horticultural science. Each week students will follow the process in a way that replicates when working as a professional – from meeting the client and taking a site survey through to managing construction works.

Pip also points out that students will be taught how to draw and colour in! “Many of our previous students have begun our courses with no experience whatsoever,” says Pip. “Often they come stating the worlds, ‘I can’t draw’, however this soon changes, with confidence and experience, so that all our students leave feeling confident that they can go out into the world and complete design projects for real clients.”

In addition to the full Garden Diploma course, there will be a series of short courses, each one a weekend course that covers one of the fundamental elements, so whether there is a topic you feel you don’t know or if you simply want a refresher, Pip can accommodate.

All the courses will be run from Arley Hall and Gardens in Nantwich, well known for their stunning perennial border and beautiful gardens, so a perfect setting for aspiring designers.

The deadline for applications for the two-year Diploma Course is Friday 24th May 2019.
