Rose expert to talk at Borde Hill Garden

Lovers of roses can experience a special treat at Borde Hill Garden this summer, when one of the world’s most respected rose experts, Michael Marriott from David Austin Roses, will be providing a talk and exclusive guided tour of Borde Hill’s renowned Rose Garden on 20th June 2019.

June will see the garden’s 750+ strong rose collection in full bloom and visitors will be able to experience their heavenly scent. The Rose Garden at Borde Hill, named after the owner’s daughter Jay Robin, has been carefully developed over the last decade to comprise formal beds bordered by box and lavender and array of obelisks and trellises are adorned with roses.

The design as carried out by gold medallist, Robin Williams in 1996, inspired by a 1902 Country Life article and has formal and informal elements. This year the rose borders have been further boosted with the addition of a range of beautifully selected herbaceous perennials chosen by garden designer and TV presenter Juliet Sargeant to compliment the roses’ colour and scent.

Michael will be talking to guests on selecting and caring for the very best rose varieties, before taking them on a tour of the garden. Borde Hill contains many of the most significant David Austin varieties including Gertrude Jekyll, Winchester Cathedral and Graham Thomas, all introduced in the early to mid 1980s. Some of the most popular roses sold in the last few years are also to be found in the garden including Olivia Rose Austin, Lady Emma Hamilton and Munstead Wood.

Guests at the talk will arrive for drinks at 10.30am to be followed by Michael’s talk and then a tour of the Rose Garden. After a pre-lunch drink in the Rose Garden guests will enjoy a buffet lunch served in the marquee.

Booking for this event is necessary – RHS Members and Friends of Borde Hill £44.00, or £55.00 for non-members. For further information please contact: www.bordehill.co.uk 01444 450326 @bordehill.co.uk
