Winning name chosen for new tomato
It may seem an unusual way to name a new tomato variety but The Burpee Seeds Europe team recently ran a competition together with Mr Fothergill’s, giving readers on the Pumpkin Beth website an opportunity to name their first-ever blight-resistant orange tomato.
The competition proved very successful and after much deliberation, the name ‘Merrygold‘ was chosen, suggested by Ann Page. We think the name perfectly captures the essence of this new variety from Burpee breeding, as it has been shown to produce a mass of bright orange fruit either in the greenhouse or outdoors when staked and side-shooted.
The 25-30 gram fruit has a sweet and slightly tangy flavour making them perfect for summer salads.
Tomato ‘Merrygold’ (pictured left) seeds will be available to purchase from Mr Fothergill’s in 2021.
