Blooms, Opera and Gin at Borde Hill

If you are looking for all the ingredients for a long hot summer of entertainment throughout July and August, look no further than Borde Hill Garden in Haywards Heath, West Sussex.

Events during 2019 will include the Sussex Festival of Gin and performances of open-air opera, all set within the Estate’s magnificent bloom filled gardens.

Borde Hill has a series of beautifully planted and linked garden rooms, bursting with colourful blooms through late summer, with each of the garden spaces having its own distinctive character. Visitors can choose to stroll along the Paradise Walk, designed by renowned garden designer, James Alexander Sinclair in 2013. Here you will find over 700 new plant additions including Astrantia, Kniphofia, Geranium, Phlomis, Phox and Sanguisorba, combining to create a vibrant carpet of colour.

If you are looking for some cool botanic refreshment while admiring the gardens you can come along on Saturday 13th July when the Estate hosts the Sussex Gin Festival, taking place in the South Park. Sussex has become a hotbed for producing bespoke, small batch and artisan gins from more than 200 distilleries. Visitors to the Festival will be able to try out a wide range of wonderful, locally distilled gins as well as watching captivating demonstrations on all things gin.

Visitors to the garden can dream of balmy days in the Mediterranean by visiting Borde Hill’s Italian Garden, (pictured banner top of page) which centres around a formal pool. This area started life as the family tennis court before being converted by Robert Stephenson Clarke in 1982. The lower terrace contains unusual trees and shrubs as well as a collection of Italian terracotta pots brimming with warm colours of geraniums and agapanthus.

Opera Brava will be performing within Borde Hill’s Garden against the backdrop of the Elizabeth Mansion House with two open air productions. La Traviata takes place on 26th July, 2019 and The Barber of Serville on 27th July.
